Rotarians and their families and friends helped with the cemetery clean-up.
Deniliquin Rotarians were back on the tools at the weekend, putting the organisation’s ‘Service above self’ motto into action.

They picked up their rakes, shovels, brooms and other tool, and partnered with the Deniliquin Friends of the Cemetery, to complete clean-up and maintenance duties at the cemetery.
Rotary Club of Deniliquin president Simon Genoff said fellow Rotarian Cheryl McMillan came to him with the idea, after learning more about the challenges faced by the Friends of the Cemetery group.
“Group member Lyn Rose told us that while Edward River Council look after the lawn cemetery section, the older section is left up to the families of those buried there or the Friends of the Cemetery,” Mr Genoff said.

“As newly elected president, along with Cheryl, I thought it was a way that we could continue to give back.
“It also helps shine a light on Rotary, and that we do get involved in community projects.
“We’re more often seen on the barbecue in a fundraising role, and that did allow us to make a number of donations at our recent changeover dinner, but it’s also great to get back to these grassroots service projects too.”

Mr Genoff said while it did require a little bit of hard yakka, the volunteers still had a great day out.
“We cleaned everything up into piles, and council agreed to come and dispose of it all,” he said.
“It’s something we’ll now look at helping with one or two times a year.”
And it’s not just the registered Rotary members who volunteered on the day.
Some of their friends and family members also offered a helping hand, including some who may be the future leaders of our service clubs.
