The RSL greens were running beautifully, and the Diggers had a task ahead of them.
Playing on the ANZAC green, rink two’s team of Gaye Goodwin, Archie Webster, Ron Marchetti and Beryl Murray (s) got off to a great start winning three ends, with a total of seven shots to three after the 5th end.
By the 10th end, the score was 12-10 with Echuca changing gears and then grabbing a six and two singles to the Diggers’ four shots over the next five ends.
The score going into the 16th end was 16-18.
Webster and Marchetti were in great form, but the Diggers couldn’t get the lead back.
Echuca gained another six shots and held RSL to four, for a final score of 21-24.
Peter Harris, Jo Chick, Craig Taylor and Ian McKenzie (s) struggled from the get go.
McKenzie, playing his first game in the twos and debuting as skipper, was under immense pressure.
By the fifth end, the Diggers managed only one shot to Echuca’s seven after five ends.
Echuca gathering threes added nine shots to RSL’s two singles, to bring the score to a disastrous 3-16.
The Diggers dug deep and found something.
They picked up a four to boost their confidence and ran with another eight shots to be just one shot down by the 15th end, 15-16.
The comeback turned into the lead for three ends and, after the 18th end, the Diggers were up 19-16.
However, they dropped a four shortly after, which put them behind 19-21 going into the last end.
Only able to manage one more shot, they finished at 20-21.
Harris was brilliant for the entirety, and an integral part of the fantastic team effort and turnaround on this rink.
Rink four had 15 shots on the card before Echuca scored.
Al Hodges, Jim Rhook, Garry Hulm and Niels Hilton (s) never looked like losing their game when the card read 15-2 at the 9th end.
Adding another nine shots and limiting Echuca to five, the score was 24-8 after 15 ends.
The Diggers all put in equally, and Echuca were shell shocked when the home side added another eight to the card and only allowed the visitors three.
The final score was 32-11.
This rink is proving themselves week-after-week.
The overall win and one winning rink gave the Midweek Diggers 12 points, and they remain third on the Campaspe Playing Area ladder with 42 points.
Due to the Echuca/Melbourne Cup next Tuesday, November 3, there will not be any pennant played in the Campaspe region.
The RSL Diggers then have the bye on November 11.
