The Wanderers hosted Swan Hill at Rotary Park on Saturday, going down 7-4.
The match took place in good conditions on Anzac Day, with both teams gathering for a minute’s silence before play got under way.
Wanderers goalkeeper Matt Crothers said he liked what he saw from the team’s play this early in the season, and the scoreline didn’t reflect the Wanderers position in the game.
“I was pretty impressed for just our second game,” he said.
“The midfield held strong, and we held a lead until three quarters of the way through the game.
“We definitely had Swan Hill spooked, and at half-time it was clear their coach emphasised that they needed to improve.
“We scored first which was great, then we alternated scoring, and it was 2-all at half-time.
“There were lead changes right throughout the game until we hit the lead 4-3.
“In the end, we just ran out of fitness.
“Our defenders could not keep up, and they scored a few late goals which won the game, which included a penalty.
“Overall the signs are pretty good and if we can work on our fitness we should compete well this season.”
This week the Wanderers play away from 1pm against Golden City, but Crothers is optimistic about a good result based on their previous performances.
“Based on the competition so far it seems like Swan Hill one, Border Raiders two and then Wanderers three.
“At this stage, everyone who played Saturday is still in (to play this weekend).
“Hamish Baker might also be coming back in from injury, if not this weekend, then next weekend. He would definitely add some firepower up forward.
“I’m still going into the game expecting a challenge.
“By no means do I want to underestimate anyone, including Golden City, but I’m also quietly confident (of a win).”
