Jacob’s sister Olivia Cartwright won every event at the Henselite Victorian Open, and the Ky family achieved even more success when the former took out the open triples alongside Addy Ryan and Harry Coleman in Sunbury.
The road to victory was a predominantly smooth one for the trio, outside a tightly contested round of 16 clash, where they went toe-to-toe with Lacey Kiss, Ella Kiss and Landon Randell, winning 14-13.
Three shots to hit the front on the 13th end proved decisive, teeing the group up for comfortable wins in the quarters and semis.
In the final, Cartwright’s group bookended a dominant run with a comfortable 18-3 win, defeating a team that included his cousin Liam McInnes, who is also from Kyabram.
Ironically, Ryan and Coleman aided Cartwright to win the triples, but both also became roadblocks that prevented the Ky native from returning home with more titles from the event.
Coleman defeated Cartwright in a thrilling boys’ singles final, where 25 ends were required for one of the bowlers to reach 21 shots, the former pulling away late on to reach the marker first.
Coleman and Ryan, both from Deer Park, also teamed up to comfortably defeat Cartwright and Mitcham’s Marlie Malcolm 18-5 in the mixed pairs decider.
But those two losses didn’t seem to dampen Cartwright’s mood, as he still returned with a title and two finals appearances to his name.
“Started off a bit rough, a bit tired on most of the days, but managed to push through and quite enjoy it,” Cartwright said.
He will now trial for the Victorian state team later this month, and also place an application to be invited to the Golden Nugget tournament in Tweed Heads.
For Jacob’s mum Naomi, it’s been a whirlwind few weeks, as her children’s recent titles both happened in quick succession.
“It's very stressful, it's not a ‘soccer mum’ sort of situation, it's a little bit of a different stress, but watching them do their best on the bowls green is very exciting,” she said.
Kyabram’s Charlie Boswood won the boys’ pairs at the state championships, following his under-18 boys’ singles win at the Victorian Open.
Elsewhere at the championships, Kyabram’s Charlie Boswood won the boys’ pairs alongside Coleman, the duo winning 14-5 in the final after pulling away across the final six ends from Connor O’Halloran and Yuvraj Miterani.
Boswood and Coleman negotiated a tricky run, narrowly winning their round of 16 and quarter-final matches 12-10 and 11-10, respectively.
Adding to the Ky flavour at the championships, Boswood and Cartwright also faced off twice in quarter-finals, with the latter being successful on both occasions, in the mixed pairs and boys’ singles.
Before the event in Sunbury, Boswood did win a title at the aforementioned Victorian Open, taking out the under-18 boys’ singles.
The Shepparton Golf Bowls Club bowler defeated Herbie Clark from Ocean Grove in a close final, with Boswood winning a third-set tie-break 4-0 after the first two were split.
“I was trying to just win the ends really, I was trying to take it one bowl at a time, and he started playing good after that second set so it wasn't easy,” Boswood said.
The Ky native was fairly dominant, only dropping that one set in the decider, having won all four sets in the quarters and semis by a combined shot total of 21-7.
Like Cartwright, Boswood’s plans also include trialling for the Victorian state team and attempting to play at the Golden Nugget.
