The annual fun run/walk, held on Mother’s Day, is an opportunity for the community to connect and reflect, and offer their support.
It is being brought to Deniliquin by the ‘Run It In Deni’ group, which has already gained support from local businesses for what is hoped will be the first of many annual fundraisers.
The event includes a 10km and 5km run or walk, along with a 1km run for children aged 10 and under, ensuring people of all ages and abilities can get involved.
It will operate alongside the Mother’s Day Markets at Deniliquin Memorial Park on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10.
Whether participants choose to run, walk or simply be present, the purpose remains the same: to stand in solidarity with those affected by breast and ovarian cancer.
A tribute wall on the day allows participants to dedicate their efforts to loved ones and reminds us that behind every step taken on the day there is a story, a memory, or someone being honoured.
For locals like Chelsea McNamara, the event carries profound personal significance after losing her mum, Jane, to breast cancer following a long battle.
Ms McNamara said the chance to take part alongside friends means everything.
“Mum had so much support by her side through her battle with breast cancer” she said.
“I’m participating with a group of my friends, which means a lot to me, and I know it would for mum too.
“It’s a way to remember Mum and show support for others going through it.”
Ms McNamara’s experience reflects a reality familiar to many in small communities like Deniliquin, where the impacts of cancer are often felt close to home.
