Operation Eastern Snow focused on roads heading to and from Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham over a three-day period, with buses and heavy vehicles a major focus.
Police are working alongside the national heavy vehicle regulator to conduct safety compliance checks at designated checkpoints.
Speeding, unregistered and unsafe vehicles, heavy vehicles, seatbelts, unlicensed drivers and driving under the influence were among the offences.
Eastern region road policing inspector Jarrad Dowswell said the results were concerning.
“It’s extremely disappointing that we’ve seen such high levels of non-compliance by motorists travelling to and from the state’s alpine areas,” Mr Dowswell said.
“These roads can be particularly treacherous when impacted by ice and snow, yet we’ve caught a significant number of motorists speeding and engaging in dangerous driving behaviours.”
All vehicles entering alpine areas during the snow season are required to carry wheel chains and fit them when instructed.
Failure to carry chains may result in a $418 fine, while failing to fit them may attract a $1046 fine.
Motorist are advised to remove snow from their vehicles before leaving the snowfields, to avoid it being dislodged and creating dangerous conditions for other road users.
They are also urged to drive to the conditions, slow down and remain alert to unfamiliar roads, especially during busy periods.
Operation Eastern Snow will continue throughout the Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Mouth Hotham areas during August.
