Eagles eyed up in second term

Echuca United looked like it belonged with Mulwala for three quarters of the game, but a second-period lapse handed the Lions a huge win in Murray Football League.

Both sides started the game at Echuca South Recreation Reserve on even footing, with United taking a one-goal lead early in the first term, but both sides finishing level on 14 points.

However, the second period told a different story as Mulwala kicked six straight goals to surge into the lead and, after a single United major, the Lions would add for more before half-time, scoring 65-8 for the quarter to lead 79-22 at the main break.

That second term would prove an aberration as, although the Eagles narrowly lost the third and fourth quarters, it was more or less an even contest.

After leading by 57 at the half, Mulwala would only take the game by 70 points, 19.10 (124) to 7.12 (54).

Hunter Beveridge was solid for the Eagles in attack, logging four goals, while Cody Haub, Matt Lias and Nicholas McKenner added one each.

With a third of the season in the books, United sits at 2-4 and will need an improved middle third if it looks to be in the finals race later in the year.

Another significant test awaits against a 4-2 Nathalia coming off the bye, as the Purples’ last outing saw them defeat Mulwala.

The Eagles will visit Nathalia Recreation Reserve this Saturday.
